Online Desk: A 12-year-old boy died after an iron rod fell on him from the under-construction Dhaka Elevated Expressway in the capital’s Mohakhali area this morning. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. He used to live on the streets, police said. The accident happened around 9:30am.
Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Matin Bishwas said, around 4:30pm that after primary investigation and talking to witnesses, they learned that the rod fell on the boy’s head when he was sitting near the rail tracks. He suffered critical head injuries and some pedestrians took him to a nearby hospital in Mohakhali.
As his condition deteriorated, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 12:45pm, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost. Pedestrians told police that the child suffered injuries when the iron rod fell on him from the expressway, he said.
Mustafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Banani Police Station, said the area falls under the jurisdiction of Dhaka Railway Police Station. “We came to know that an iron rod fell on him from the expressway,” he said. AHMS Kamal, project director of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway, could not be reached for comment despite multiple attempts.
