The Daily Morning Voice Online Desk: A Dhaka court today cancelled bail of e-commerce platform Evaly’s chairman Shamima Nasrin and issued an arrest warrant against her in a case filed with Gulshan Police Station over embezzlement of Tk 3.1 lakh from a customer. Earlier in the day, the same court framed charges against Nasrin and her husband Mohammad Rassel, also the CEO and Managing Director of Evaly, in the case. Rassel, now in jail, pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan read out the charges against them.
The magistrate issued the arrest warrant against Shamima Nasrin as she remained absent at the court submitting a time petition through her lawyer. The magistrate directed officers-in-charge of Dhanmondi and Kafrul police stations to submit by February 18 the progress report on execution of arrest warrant issued against her. The court discharged Md Mainul Haque, an employee of the company, from the charges of the case as the court found no evidence to prosecute him. On August 11 this year, Md Rafiqul Islam, a sub-inspector of Criminal Investigation Department and also the investigation officer of the case, pressed charges against three people, including the couple. Arif Baker, a consumer, filed the case against them on September 17 last year.
According to the case statement, Arif had ordered goods worth Tk 3,10,597 from Evaly in May and June after seeing attractive offers on its website on May 29 of 2021. But he did not get the products within the stipulated time. His friends also ordered products from Evaly and paid in advance. The company was committed to refund the paid amount if the goods were not delivered within seven to 45 working days, said Arif. But Evaly failed to deliver the products and refund the money, he said.
