Online Desk: The elections to Khulna and Barishal City Corporations held on Monday amid a sporadic clash in Barishal city. The voting in two city corporations was begun at 8am and ended at 4pm. Voters cast their votes through Electronic Voting Machines. Though voting in Khulna city held peacefully but supporters of ruling Awami League backed candidate reportedly attacked Islami Andolon Bangladesh mayoral candidate Mufti Syed Faizul Karim and his supporters in Choumatha Mor area in Barishal city in the afternoon. Several people were injured in the attack.
According to our Barishal and Khulna city correspondents, counting of votes has begun in two cities as elections ended and candidates are waiting for the declaration of results.
In Barishal City Corporation (BCC) polls, the mayoral candidates are — Awami League-nominated Abul Khair Abdullah Khokon Serniabat, Jatiya Party’s (JaPa) Engineer Iqbal Hossain Tapas, Islamic Andolan Bangladesh’s Mufti Syed Faizul Karim, Zaker Party’s Mizanur Rahman Bachchu, and independent candidates Ali Hossain Howladar, former Chhatra Dal leader Kamrul Ahsan Rupam and Asaduzzaman.
There are 116 candidates are vying for councillors at 30 wards in the city and 42 women candidates for the 10 reserved councillor posts.
In Khulna City Corporation polls, five candidates, who vying for mayoral posts, are—AL backed Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Jatiya Party’s Shafiqul Islam Modhu, Bangladesh Islami Andolon’s Moulana Abdul Awal, Zaker Party’s S M Sabbir Hossain, and independent candidate Shafiqur Rahman Mushfiq. Total 136 candidates are vying for councillors in 29 general wards, and 30 for reserved seats. Two councillors for wards 13 and 24 have been elected unopposed.
