Online Desk: The Directorate of Health has directed the Central Hospital authorities to stop all the activities of its operation theatre (OT).  Dr Sheikh Daud Adnan, Director (Hospitals and Clinics) of the Directorate of Health, stated it. The Directorate of Health issued the directive on Friday (June 16, 2023) afternoon.

Earlier, a team of the Directorate of Health visited the Central Hospital responding to a call of the patient Mahbuba Rahman Ankhi. The decision was taken as they found no “appropriate environment” at the operation theatre for conducting operations. “The OT of the Central Hospital will remain close until further order,” said Dr Sheikh Daud Adnan.

At the same time, he said Prof. Dr. Sangjukta Saha of the Gynecology Department of the hospital has been asked not to get involved in medical practices. Earlier on Wednesday (June 14, 2023), a case was filed at Dhanmondi Police Station mentioning the names of five people accusing them for the death of a newborn due to their alleged ‘negligence and wrong treatment.’ Police arrested two doctors of the Gynecology Department at night following the filing of the case.

The arrested doctors were Dr Shahjadi and Dr Muna. Producing them before a magistrate court in Dhaka, the investigating officer pleaded to record their confessional statements. At that time, the two doctors voluntarily agreed to submit confessional statements. Later, responding to the IO’s plea, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farha Deeba Chanda’s court recorded the statement of Dr Muna, while Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Afnan Sumi recorded the statement of Dr Shahjadi.

Later, hearing took place on the bail pleas of the two accused doctors. Following the hearing, the same court ordered to sent them to jail rejecting their bail pleas.

Patient Mahbuba Rahman Ankhi’s husband Yaqub Ali Sumon alleged that he admitted his wife to Central Hospital under Prof. Dr. Sangjukta Saha at the Gynecology Department. She was not in the country though his wife’s delivery was scheduled to take place under that physician. But, the hospital authorities concealed the matter and conducted the delivery. Sumon said his wife had been availing regular check-up under Prof. Dr. Sangjukta Saha over the last three months. Her physical condition was suitable for normal delivery. The hospital authorities also tried for normal delivery.

What happened

At about 12:50am on Friday (June 9), Sumon admitted his wife to Central Hospital under Prof. Dr. Sangjukta Saha of the Gynecology Department. But, instead of Dr. Sangjukta Saha, one Dr Mili was present. Without any check-up, Dr Mili started Caesarean operation of the patient.

According to the statement of Sumon, Dr Mili and other doctors cut the urinary tract and rectum of the patient while cutting her abdomen for delivery. Instantly, the patient started bleeding profusely and became unconscious. The newborn was brought out of the mother’s body through the Caesarean section. As a result, the heartbeat of the newborn had dropped and it was taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) instantly.

In such a situation, Sumon said he repeated looked for Prof Dr Sangjukta Saha, but the hospital authorities told him that she was outside the country. After some time, the hospital authorities pronounced the newborn dead. As there was no CCU and NICU facilities available at the Central Hospital, Sumon’s wife was taken to life support at CCU of LabAid Hospital. Afterward, the Central Hospital authorities told Sumon that his newborn died. In such a situation, Sumon filed a general diary calling on 999.
