Online Desk : Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today expressed deep concern over the increasing presence of harmful chemicals in food and the growing public health risks they pose. He urged all stakeholders to work together to confront what he described as a critical national crisis, reports BSS. “We are aware of the various forms of contamination in food. We must determine how to confront this. Our children, parents, and loved ones are all victims. For our own sake, we must work together to overcome this crisis,” he said.
Prof Yunus made the remarks during a meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna, convened to discuss urgent measures to address food contamination and prevent adulteration.
According to the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, he presided over the meeting, which examined in detail the rise of foodborne diseases, the risks associated with chemical contamination, and the immediate steps required to tackle the problem.
On moving swiftly to curb food adulteration, he said, “We will discuss the implementation aspects and decide which actions are urgent to start now. We will take immediate initiatives in this regard.” He instructed all concerned ministries and agencies to submit written proposals within a week outlining the necessary actions to address the crisis. Those who attended the meeting included Agriculture and Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder, Health and Family Welfare Adviser Nurjahan Begum, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter, National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman, Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Sayedur Rahman, Principal Secretary M Siraz Uddin Miah, secretaries of relevant ministries, BSTI DG SM Ferdous Alam, DNCRP DG Farooq Ahmed, BFSA Chairman Zakaria, and Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr Md Majibur Rahman.
