Online Desk  :  BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has expressed his gratitude to the country people as they provided their mandate to his party. He said, “This victory belongs to Bangladesh. This victory belongs to democracy. This victory belongs to the people who aspire to and have sacrificed for democracy. From today, we are all free, with the true essence of freedom and rights restored.” He made the statement on Saturday while addressing the media following party’s victory in the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

“I congratulate the people of Bangladesh. By overcoming all obstacles, you have paved the way for the establishment of democracy in the country,” he said, adding, “We are about to begin our journey in a situation marked by a fragile economy left behind by the authoritarian regime, weakened constitutional and statutory institutions, and a deteriorating law and order situation.” Calling upon the people for unity, Tarique Rahman said, “I firmly believe that national unity is our collective strength, while division is our weakness.”

“During the election, while competing against one another, misunderstandings or discord may have arisen in some places. I urge everyone to ensure that such disputes do not turn into revenge or retaliation.” He continued saying, “Our position is clear. Peace and order must be maintained at any cost. No wrongdoing or unlawful activity will be tolerated. Regardless of party, religion, race, or differing opinions, under no circumstances will attacks by the strong against the weak be accepted.”

Thanking people of the country, he said, “The freedom-loving, pro-democracy people of the country have once again brought victory to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP, Alhamdulillah.” He also congratulated other political parties including Jamaat, NCP, Islami Andolon Bangladesh for their participation in the election. On the other hand, he also thanked the Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus and members of Election Commission for arranging a free, fair and participatory election.

The BNP Chairman also called other political parties to remain united and said, “Our paths and opinions may differ, but in the interest of the country, we must remain united.” Earlier, the party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is becoming the Prime Minister. He said, “He (Tarique Rahman) will lead the country within the next few days.” The BNP Secretary General mentioned that this election has proven that just as the party led by Tarique Rahman is united, so too are the 180 million people of the country. He also commented that liberal democracy has won the election.

Members of the BNP Standing Committee were also present at the press conference.
