Online Desk  : A written complaint was filed with Shahbagh police station against actress Meher Afroz Shawon, film actress Mahiya Mahi and another woman, Shanta Farjana, accusing them of making derogatory remarks about and spreading propaganda against the July Uprising. The complaint was lodged by three central leaders of an organisation named Rashtra Songlap Forum on Friday, said Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge Md Moniruzzaman on Saturday.

“Since the allegations are cyber-related, the complaint has been forwarded to the Cyber Crime Division of the Detective Branch for verification. They will investigate the matter,” the OC said. According to police sources, the complainants sought legal action under the existing laws over social media posts and video messages they alleged had insulted the July Uprising and its participants.

The complaint was filed by Rashtra Songlap Forum central member secretary ANM Ayas, central chief organiser Muhammad Shah Alam Badsha and member Tuhin Farazi. In the complaint, they said the July Uprising had become a landmark chapter in Bangladesh’s history through the sacrifices of more than 1,400 people killed and over 30,000 others injured.

They alleged that Shanta Farjana uploaded a video on her Facebook account showing her striking a July memorial with a shoe, which they claimed insulted the memory of those killed during the movement and triggered public outrage.

The complaint also accused Shawon of posting video messages on social media portraying the July uprising as a staged or pre-planned event and making derogatory remarks about the movement and the state.

It further alleged that Mahi had posted comments on social media mocking individuals and organisations involved in the uprising by comparing their participation to acting, which the complainants claimed demeaned participants, including members of political parties and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
