Online Desk  :   The government is set to formulate a policy soon on the operation of battery-run rickshaws on Dhaka’s major roads and highways. The policy will determine where and to what extent these rickshaws will be allowed to operate, as well as set standards for the vehicles, their technical capabilities and driver training, among other issues. Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Affairs Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman disclosed this at a press conference at the Secretariat on Tuesday (August 25) on the progress of various government activities.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Andalib Rahman Partha and State Minister Yasser Khan Chowdhury were present at the press conference. The adviser said battery-run rickshaws began operating on Dhaka’s major roads after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. While their operation has made commuting somewhat easier for people, it has also created various problems.

In particular, the rickshaws are contributing to traffic congestion, while their drivers often lack the necessary training. Another important concern is whether the vehicles are sufficiently safe and meet the required technical and quality standards.

Zahed Ur Rahman said the government would formulate a policy on the issue very soon. The policy would specify the areas where the rickshaws could operate and the extent to which they would be allowed to do so, along with setting standards for the vehicles. He expressed hope that the policy would help establish a more orderly system quickly.
