Govt to present accurate history to children : State minister

Online Desk : State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury called for presenting the accurate history of Bangladesh’s independence and democracy to the next generation, including the contributions and sacrifices of those who helped achieve them, reports BSS. He made the remarks on Sunday as chief guest at the unveiling and publication festival of two books, Shaheed Ziaar Golpo Shono and Chhotder Priyo Khaleda Zia, written by journalist and author Sabrina Shuvra. The event was held at the Abdus Salam Auditorium of the National Press Club and organized by publisher Dashmik.
Yasser Choudhury said the Information and Broadcasting Ministry was working to present the country’s history accurately and was ready to provide comprehensive support for such initiatives. “Books, writings or films have not been produced in that proportion. We from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting are working to present accurate history,” he said. He called for English translations of such books for Bangladeshi children and adolescents living abroad so they could learn about the country’s history and the contributions of its leaders.
“If martyred President Ziaur Rahman had not declared independence that day and said ‘I revolt’, we might not have an independent country today. Similarly, the national leader, the late Begum Khaleda Zia, risked her life to protect and re-establish democracy. If we do not present this contribution of hers to the new generation, it may be lost in the evolution of time,” he said. Yasser said democracy and voting rights achieved through the student-people revolution on August 5, 2024, had to be protected as part of the 17-year movement and struggle led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He urged people from all walks of life to remain vocal to prevent fascism from returning to the country. Member of Parliament Selimuzzaman Selim, Member of Parliament SM Jilani, Member of Parliament KM Babar and Member of Parliament Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan Dipu spoke as special guests at the event, chaired by Dashmik owner Dipant Raihan. Rabindra University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Tahmina Akhter Topi and journalist and fiction writer Ehsan Mahmud spoke as discussants. Writer Kalam Faraiji, author and journalist Sabrina Shuvra, poet Mintu Haque, Dhaka University Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas and Touhidur Rahman Awal also spoke.
Speakers praised Shuvra’s initiative to present the life stories and political history of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia in a form suitable for children, calling it commendable and timely.
