Info minister opens 15-day tree fair in Barishal

Online Desk : A 15-day divisional tree-planting campaign and tree fair has begun in Barishal, reports BSS. Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon formally inaugurated the fair today by releasing balloons and festoons at Bell’s Park in the city. Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony, the minister said Bangladesh and the world are facing serious risks due to climate change. “Especially our coastal regions are at high risk. Global action and coordinated initiatives are needed to address this problem,” he said.
Urging people to remain mindful of fuel consumption, Swapon said the world could become uninhabitable for humans in the future if greater emphasis is not placed on the use of environmentally friendly fuels. Reiterating the government’s strong commitment to addressing climate change and protecting the environment, he said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman does not believe in “cheap development.”
“The biggest proof of his visionary thinking and effective initiatives to protect the environment is the mega plan to plant 25 crore trees across the country over the next five years,” he said. The minister said five crore saplings would be planted every year as part of the initiative, while tree fairs were being organised across the country to support the campaign. With Barishal Divisional Commissioner Khalil Ahmed in the chair, Barishal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abu Raihan Muhammad Saleh and Divisional Forest Officer Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, among others, spoke at the event.
Students from various schools and colleges, representatives of civil society and members of the public attended the programme. After the ceremony, Swapon visited the 50 stalls and nurseries participating in the fair. Organised by 50 nurseries from different districts of Barishal division, the fair will remain open to visitors from 9:00am to 10:00pm every day for 15 days.
