He said the then-government decided to ban the party on that day, and the ban was formally enforced on August 1. Dr Shafiqur made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the triennial national conference of the Bangladesh Transport Workers Federation at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday (July 31).

He said, “This day in 2024 was extremely painful for our party. The then fascist government unjustly decided to ban us. The following day, August 1, they carried out that decision. But we immediately rejected it through a press conference and called on the people of the country and our colleagues. We said the time for staying at home was over and that everyone should stand in solidarity with the protesters.” He said the public responded overwhelmingly to that call.

“As a result, within just three days, the government failed to hold on to power and was forced to flee the country on August 5,” he said. The Jamaat chief said, “They banned us on August 1, but Allah did not decree that they would remain in power for long. By the afternoon of August 5, they had left the country.”He claimed that the then-government believed it could suppress the movement through repression, persecution, and the use of force, as it had done in the past.

“But their plan failed in the face of public resistance and the will of Allah,” he said. Dr Shafiqur said no government can survive indefinitely by oppressing and persecuting the people. “The consequences of injustice and wrongdoing must eventually be faced,” he added.
