Online Desk : The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) staged a sit-in outside the Election Commission (EC) on Sunday morning, protesting three issues, including the placement of the ‘sheaf of paddy’ symbol on ballot papers. JCD leaders alleged that the ‘sheaf of paddy’ symbol was folded inside postal ballots sent abroad, while another symbol was positioned in a way that would appear first when the ballot paper was folded. The demonstration was held in front of the EC building in Agargaon, Dhaka.
Led by JCD leader Rakibul Islam Rakib, the protesters expressed concern over what they described as the EC’s biased and questionable decisions regarding postal ballots, claiming these decisions have raised serious doubts about the neutrality of the election process. They also criticised the commission for making what they called hasty and short-sighted decisions under pressure from a political group, instead of taking responsible and rational steps.
In addition, the protesters condemned what they described as an unprecedented and controversial directive issued by the EC regarding the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Central Students’ Union elections. They alleged the directive reflected direct political interference and posed a threat to democratic practices at the university.
