Khaleda Zia under close observation at hospital

Online Desk: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia is under physicians’ close observation at Evercare Hospital in the capital. BNP chairperson’s personal physician professor AZM Zahid Hossain told reporters on Monday. He said a medical board has been formed for Khaleda Zia. The board is meeting and reviewing her health condition two to three times a day and providing her with necessary treatment.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited Khaleda Zia at the hospital around 10pm on Sunday. He at the time asked about Khaleda Zia’s health and talked to the physicians.
Earlier, on August 10, Khaleda Zia was admitted to the hospital for some medical tests. She has been suffering from arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung, and eye issues for a long time. She was diagnosed with Covid-19 and spent 81 days in hospital care in 2021.
Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on 8 February 2018. Later, the punishment was increased to 10 years at the High Court. After that she was sentenced to another seven years’ imprisonment in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. In April 2020, during the Covid pandemic, the government granted a request from her family for a conditional temporary release from jail for ‘humanitarian reasons’.
She has since stayed at her Gulshan home under the care of her personal doctors and has had limited interaction with others.
