President directs police to stop extrajudicial killings

Online Desk : President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday directed the police to take effective measures to prevent extrajudicial killings, harassment of people and filing of false cases, while urging the force to perform its duties with honesty, dedication and professionalism. The president gave the directives when Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.
During the meeting, the president instructed the police to take urgent and appropriate measures to establish the rule of law and ensure effective law enforcement across the country. He also directed the police chief to take effective steps to curb cybercrimes, including the spread of misinformation, disinformation and rumours. The president asked the police to intensify efforts against mugging, extortion and the spread of drugs and to take effective measures to ensure the safety of women and children.
He stressed the importance of keeping people regularly informed about measures taken by the police and conducting wider awareness campaigns. The president said that the current government was working to uphold people’s fundamental human rights and democratic rights. Against this backdrop, he directed the police to continue taking effective measures to prevent extrajudicial killings, harassment of people and false cases.
During the meeting, IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir briefed the president on various measures taken to strengthen the morale of police personnel and modernise and digitalise the police force. The IGP also sought the president’s overall cooperation in discharging the responsibilities of the police. The president assured him of his cooperation.
