Online Desk : BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman said individuals belonging to “secret groups” have emerged as new oppressors in the country. He said Bangladesh would be governed in line with the people’s verdict, adding that the public recognises one political party as operating under a “secret” identity.
“In Bangladesh, they have now emerged in the form of new oppressors,” he said. Tarique made the remarks while addressing an election rally as the chief guest at the historic Bells Park ground in Barishal on Wednesday noon. He also said people cannot expect dignity from a party whose leaders fail to respect mothers and sisters. The BNP chief said a leader of the “secret group” in Cumilla had made remarks that exposed the group’s mentality and contempt for the people.
He said the leader claimed they would beg at people’s feet until the 12th, and after the 12th the people would beg at their feet. “What level of people are they? How much contempt they have for the public, how they treat people, and what kind of mindset they hold have now been exposed,” Tarique said. He warned that if such groups are elected, people would soon realise how miserable life could become. “That is why these secret groups must be taught a proper lesson and the public must remain alert about them,” he said.
Referring to their political history, Tarique Rahman said these groups had repeatedly stood alongside authoritarian governments, describing them as “two sides of the same coin.” He alleged they were aligned with autocratic forces in 1971, 1986, 1996 and throughout the past 15 years. Speaking about problems in Barishal, he said river erosion is the region’s biggest challenge and embankments must be built. “Many development works remain unfinished. To complete them, the people must take the right decision,” he said.
The BNP chairman said several projects had been initiated during BNP’s tenure but could not be completed. “Many issues have piled up and must be resolved. If BNP comes to power, it wants to work to address these problems,” he added. Stressing women’s participation, Tarique said a country cannot move forward by confining women to their homes. Men and women must work together, shoulder to shoulder. Otherwise, it will not be possible to build the country we aspire to.
