Sugar, chickpeas prices rise ahead of Ramadan as onion, eggs ease

While sugar and chickpeas, two high-demand items during the holy month, have seen noticeable price hikes, local onions and farm eggs have become more affordable. Retail surveys in Rampura, Malibagh, and Segunbagicha show that chickpeas are selling at Tk 100–110 per kg, up from Tk 90–100 last week. Similarly, packeted sugar now costs Tk 105 per kg, while bulk sugar is priced at Tk 110 or higher, despite normal supply and stable international rates. Retailers attribute the rise to wholesalers adjusting prices in anticipation of Ramadan demand.

In contrast, local onion prices have fallen to Tk 50–55 per kg, and farm eggs remain affordable, with brown eggs at Tk 110–115 per dozen and white eggs at Tk 100–105 per dozen. Poultry prices have increased: broiler chicken is selling for Tk 170–185 per kg, while Sonali chicken ranges between Tk 290–300 per kg. Seasonal vegetables such as cauliflower and cabbage have eased slightly, with cauliflower at Tk 35–40 per kg and cabbage at Tk 30–35 per kg.

Meanwhile, beans are being sold at Tk 40–60 per kg, eggplants at Tk 50–70 per kg depending on quality, and tomatoes at Tk 50–80 per kg. Other vegetables in the market are being sold at their previous prices.
