Online Desk  :  BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, accompanied by his family members, paid a courtesy call on Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Thursday. Tarique Rahman entered Jamuna at around 7:30 pm with his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and daughter Barrister Zaima Rahman. The vehicle carrying him left the guest house at 9:10 pm, indicating that he stayed there for about two and a half hours.

According to sources, various issues, including preparations for the upcoming national elections, were discussed during the meeting. During the meeting, the chief adviser expressed his condolences over the death of BNP’s late chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Earlier in the evening, Tarique Rahman left the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan at 6:42 pm and went to his residence. He departed for Jamuna with his family at 6:52 pm.

This was not the first meeting between the two leaders. Tarique Rahman earlier held a private meeting with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in London on June 13 last year, when he was the acting chairman of the BNP. Following that meeting at the Dorchester Hotel, representatives of both sides issued a joint statement. Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh with his family on December 25 after spending 17 years in exile in the UK. Upon arriving at the airport, he thanked the chief adviser over the phone for his overall support, including security arrangements.

Former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia passed away on December 30. Professor Muhammad Yunus and Tarique Rahman met again at Khaleda Zia’s funeral at the Jatiya Sangsad premises on December 31. Tarique Rahman was unanimously elected BNP chairman on January 9 at a meeting of the National Standing Committee, the party’s highest policy-making body. Thursday’s meeting marked his first official meeting as BNP chairman with Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser to the interim government.
