Online Desk : The US Embassy in Dhaka has issued a security and travel alert for Bangladesh, citing concerns over possible violence as the country approaches its national parliamentary election and a referendum. In a security notice issued on Monday, the embassy said political rallies and protests are likely to increase in the coming days, advising US citizens in Bangladesh to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations.
The warning comes after the Election Commission has announced that the parliamentary election and referendum are scheduled to be held on February 12. The embassy cautioned that as the election draws closer, political activities may become more frequent and intense. It also warned that protests that begin peacefully can quickly turn violent, urging US nationals to exercise heightened caution and stay away from crowded areas.
The advisory further encouraged US citizens to remain alert to their surroundings, monitor local media regularly for updates, and avoid any form of crowd or public assembly. In case of emergencies, the embassy advised US nationals to contact the US Embassy in Dhaka or the US Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs. It also urged citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive updated security information and assistance if needed.
