The Daily Morning Voice Online Desk: The Supreme Court today directed the lower court concerned to not run trial proceedings of a narcotics case against film actress Pori Moni for the next six months. The Appellate Division of the SC also asked the High Court to dispose of within six months, the rule which ordered (March 1, 2022) the state to explain why the proceedings of the case should not be scrapped. The apex court said if the HC cannot dispose of the rule in six months, the trial proceedings will resume.
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Md Nuruzzaman passed the order following a petition filed by the state that on March last year stayed the trial proceedings of the case against Pori Moni. Other judges of the bench are Justice Borhanuddin and Justice Md Abu Jafor Siddique. Lawyers ZI Khan Panna and Shah Monjurul Hoque appeared for Pori Moni while Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi represented the state during hearing of the petition.
A Dhaka court on January 5, last year framed charges against Pori Moni and her two associates Ashraful Islam Dipu and Kabir Hossain in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act. Kazi Golam Mostafa, inspector of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Investigation Officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka on October 4, last year.
