Online Desk  :  The Opposition Leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has strongly condemned remarks made by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lawmaker Fazlur Rahman regarding his family background and political ideology.  Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, Dr Shafiqur asserted that choosing his political affiliation is his constitutional right and demanded the BNP lawmaker’s comments be expunged from the official records.

Taking the floor on the 23rd day of the first parliamentary session, Dr Shafiqur responded to Kishoreganj-4 MP’s earlier claims. He stated that while he respects the veteran politician’s age and contributions to the 1971 Liberation War, no one has the right to belittle the sacrifices of others. Dr Shafiqur accused Fazlur of launching an unwarranted personal attack by questioning his identity as a member of a martyred freedom fighter’s family and declaring that such individuals cannot join Jamaat-e-Islami.

Dr Shafiqur described the remarks as a severe violation of his democratic freedoms. He emphasized that neither the state nor the constitution grants anyone the authority to dictate another citizen’s ideological choices.
Labeling the questioning of his familial identity a serious offense, he added that the attempt to police his political affiliation was an additional transgression. Highlighting his party’s constructive role in the house, the opposition leader referenced their recent cooperation with the Prime Minister in addressing the national energy crisis. He expressed deep disappointment at the veteran lawmaker’s rhetoric, noting that baseless shouting and personal insults achieve nothing.

Quoting a proverb, he remarked that when logic fails, tempers flare, adding that anger only leads to defeat. Dr Shafiqur urged his fellow parliamentarians to maintain cool heads and engage in fact-based, logical debates to inspire the nation and build public trust in the legislature. He reiterated his desire for the country to move forward united, rather than being dragged into divisive politics. Following his address, the Speaker assured the house that any unparliamentary language or phrasing used during the session would be reviewed and expunged from the official proceedings in accordance with parliamentary rules.
