Bid to abduct 2 people on flyover: RAB man among three arrested

The Daily Morning Voice Online Desk: Three persons including a member of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have been arrested by police following their attempts to abduct two men waylaid their car on Mohakhali Flyover in the capital. The incident happened at around 2:15am on Saturday (January 21, 2023), said Banani Police Station’s officer-in-charge (OC) Noor-e-Azam. The OC said the victims filed a case against the arrested persons including RAB personnel Momin in connection with the attempt to abduction.

Police and local sources said the victims were going home from the Dhaka Airport after Friday midnight. A car followed them on their way to home. When the victims’ car got onto Mohakhali Flyover, the car of the accused waylaid the vehicle coming from the rear side. At that time, the victims were brought out of the car showing pistols and handcuffs were put on their hands. Being scared, the victims started shouting and pleading to save their lives. Though many people were going through the flyover, none came forward to save the victims. However, a journalist of a private television channel and a police member were going through the flyover. When they saw it, they instantly stopped and wanted to know the identities witnessing the RAB jacket wearing personnel.

Quoting the victims Reaz and Shahidul, a policeman of Banani Police Station, on condition of anonymity, said when the victims were going home boarding a private car from the Dhaka Airport area, a car followed them from behind and started manhandling them stopping their car on Mohakhali Flyover. They also told them that the entire car would be searched. They also threatened to shoot them dead. Police said witnessing such an incident, a journalist and policeman going through the flyover stopped and wanted to know their identities. However, the identity card of one of the abductors was date expired.

At one stage, the policeman called on National Emergency Service 999 and informed the matter. Just at that time, the RAB personnel tried to pick him up on their car. However, when they opposed them, the abductors fled away. However, police managed to catch one of them. He was then handed over to police. A firearm was also recovered from his possession. The arrested person was identified as Joy, who hailed from Dinajpur district. He told police that he worked at a garment factory in Tongi. It could not be possible to make contact with RAB Media Wing Director Commander Khondker Al Moin for his comments by making phone calls.
