Advisers’ Council approves CrPC amendment

Online Desk : The Council of Advisers has approved in principle the draft of The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, marking a significant step toward reforming the country’s criminal justice system.
The approval came at a meeting of the Council of Advisers held on Sunday at the Chief Adviser’s Office, with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in the chair, according to a press release issued by Cabinet Division. The amendment aims to modernize key aspects of the criminal procedure code to ensure greater efficiency, transparency and justice in legal proceedings.
Though specific details of the amendment were not disclosed, officials indicated that it includes procedural updates aligned with current legal and technological standards. In the same meeting, the council approved several other important proposals. These include a declaration to recognize all services under National Board of Revenue (NBR) as ‘Essential Services’, ensuring that revenue operations continue without disruption. The council also gave its nod to a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Bangladesh and Turkey on counter-terrorism and security cooperation, aimed at boosting bilateral efforts to combat transnational threats.
Additionally, the council approved in principle the establishment of a mission of Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Bangladesh. The move comes amid efforts to strengthen human rights protection and monitoring mechanisms in the country. Another key approval was granted to National Rooftop Solar Programme, a policy initiative designed to promote renewable energy and reduce dependency on fossil fuels through solar panel installation on rooftops nationwide. The series of approvals reflect the interim government’s continued push for legal reform, institutional strengthening and sustainable development.
