Chankharpul killing : Ex-DMP commissioner, 2 others get death penalty

Online Desk : The two others condemned convicts are former joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty and former additional deputy commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam. The tribunal also sentenced former assistant commissioner of DMP’s Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul to six years’ imprisonment, former inspector Md Arshad Hossain to four years’ imprisonment and former constables Md Sujon, Imaj Hossain Emon and Nasirul Islam to three years’ imprisonment each.
The verdict was broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV) and on the verified Facebook page of the Office of the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal. However, the families of the victims expressed dissatisfaction over the verdict. This is the second verdict delivered in a case over crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising. The prosecution filed the formal charge against all eight accused on May 25, 2025, marking the first formal charge filed at the ICT in cases arising from the July-August Mass Uprising.
According to the prosecution, on August 5, 2024, police opened fire on a peaceful student movement at Chankharpul, leaving six people dead. The victims were Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Junayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawladar, Md Ismamul Haque and Manik Mia Shahrik.
