China offers support for jet crash probe in Dhaka

Online Desk : Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen on Tuesday expressed China’s readiness to assist Bangladesh in conducting a “comprehensive and impartial” investigation into the July 21 crash of a Bangladesh Air Force jet that struck a building of Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Uttara area. The crash, involving a China-made aircraft, claimed 34 lives; mostly primary school students and injured many others. Speaking at an event organized by Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at Jatiya Press Club, Ambassador Yao confirmed that a Chinese technical expert team is expected to arrive in Dhaka on Wednesday in response to a formal request from Bangladeshi authorities.
On the issue of trade, the ambassador criticized the United States for imposing a 35 percent tariff on Bangladeshi goods, calling it “neither reasonable nor ethical,” particularly for a least developed country. He voiced China’s support for Bangladesh’s efforts to resolve trade disputes with the US through dialogue and said Beijing backs Dhaka in defending its legitimate interests within the framework of World Trade Organization (WTO). “In the face of unilateralism and protectionism, no country is immune,” Ambassador Yao said. “If international trade reverts to the law of the jungle, everyone becomes a victim.”
He accused the US of weaponizing tariffs and engaging in “hegemonic politics and unilateral bullying” under the guise of reciprocal trade measures—a trend that began during the Trump administration, he noted. This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Bangladesh. Ambassador Yao highlighted that despite shifting global dynamics, the two countries are facing new opportunities for deeper cooperation and solidarity. DCAB President AKM Moinuddin and General Secretary Md Arifuzzaman Mamun also spoke at the event.
