Online Desk: An arrested suspect has allegedly stabbed Municipal Awami League leader Saifuddin to death at a hotel room in Cox’s Bazar to ‘save himself from the sexual harassment of the deceased.’ Ashraful Islam, 18, has told police that he killed Cox’s Bazar Municipal Awami League leader Saifuddin.
On Monday (August 21) morning, police recovered the body of Awami League leader Saifuddin from the Room No. 208 on the first floor of Hotel Sun Moon at Holiday Crossing in Cox’s Bazar town. Saifuddin was the son of former Ansar commander Abul Boshar of South Ghonar Para under Ward No. 9 in Cox’s Bazar municipality. He was the president of the Kaderia Government Primary School’s managing committee.
Besides, he was the Information and Research secretary of the previous committee of Cox’s Bazar Municipal Awami League. Cox’s Bazar police super Md Mahfuzul Islam disclosed it to newsmen at a press conference on Tuesday (August 22) afternoon.
Earlier, Ashraful Islam was detained from Howaikang in Teknaf on Monday (August 20) night. Detained Ashraful is the son of Md Hashem Prokash Kashem Majhi’s son at South Pahartali area of Islampur in Cox’s Bazar municipal town.
At the press conference, SP Mahfuzul Islam said, “Ashraful got acquainted with Saifuddin through the latter’s distant brother-in-law Kaiser Hamid Nayan and his friend. On the day of occurence, Saifuddin travelled to different places in Cox’s Bazar town with Ashraful on board his motircycle. Both Saifuddin and Ashraf went to Hotel Sunmoon at about 4:00pm buying Bangla Maud (liquor or rectified spirit) and guava from barabazar in the town. Passing some time inside the hotel room after drinking the liquor, he came out Ashraful from the hotel room and dropped him at Goldighipar area.”
Mahfuzul Islam continued: “Just after an hour, Saifuddin called Ashraful to his hotel room over phone to pass some time closely. When Ashraful declined to go to the hotel, Saifuddin threatened him to upload a video of an immoral act with Ashraful recorded on his mobile phone. Reaching the hotel room, Ashraful insisted Saifuddin to delete the particular video from his cellphone. Then Saifuddin attempted to rape Ashraful again. Suddenly, the two got involved in an altercation, and at one stage, Saifuddin tried to strangle Ashraful.”
“At that time,” the police super said, “Ashraful repeatedly stabbed Saifuddin with a knife which he brought in his pocket. Saifuddin fell on the bed. Then Ashraful stabbed Saifuddin on his head, legs and other parts of the body. At one stage, Ashraful tied the hands of Saifuddin with his trouser belt so that he could not attack him again. After being confirmed about Saifuddin’s death, Ashraful wiped out the blood stains on his shirt and then broke up Saifuddin’s mobile phone. Later, he went out of the hotel room with Saifuddin’s moneybag and motorcycle.”
He said Ashraf was arrested when he was going to Teknaf by a bus on Monday night. Later, according to his information, the cellphone, motorcycle, moneybag and the knife used in murder were seized. Police said investigation is going on to know whether any other persons were involved in the murder.
