General Holiday declared for all garment factories on August 5

Online Desk : The garment owners’ association BGMEA has decided to close all garment factories on August 5 as a general holiday on the occasion of the ‘July Uprising Day’. Expressing respect for the martyrs of the July Uprising and solidarity with the government’s decision, the organization has requested the owners in a notice to keep all garment factories closed. The BGMEA notice said, “The government has declared August 5 every year as the ‘July Uprising Day’ (including general holiday).” Garment factories set 11 days of festival holidays at the beginning of the year as per Section 118 of the Bangladesh Labor Act 2006 and Rule 110 of the Bangladesh Labor Rules, 2015. Since the Bangladesh government declared August 5 as the ‘July Uprising Day’ general holiday in the middle of the year, the said holiday was not included in the festival holidays. Therefore, there is no obligation for the factories to provide the said holiday according to the labor law.
The notice further said, “However, out of respect for the martyrs of the July Uprising and in solidarity with the government’s decision, we specifically request that all garment factories be closed as a general holiday on August 5, the “July Mass Uprising Day.”
