NCP seeks action against authority concerned over security lapse in NY

Online Desk : The Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) has demanded punitive action against officials who failed to provide security to its leaders in the United States, after party secretary Akhtar Hossain and first senior joint member secretary of Nationa Dr Tasnim Jara were harassed and pelted with eggs at New York’s JFK Airport. The party raised the demand on Tuesday at an emergency press conference in Dhaka, condemning the incident and holding responsible those tasked with ensuring the delegation’s safety.
NCP convener Nahid Islam alleged that Awami League activists launched the attack in a premeditated manner when Hossain and other leaders arrived with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus to attend the 80th UN General Assembly session. According to NCP, Awami League activists shouted slogans and hurled insults at Hossain and senior joint secretary Tasnim Jara before Hossain was physically harassed and struck with eggs. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday Bangladesh time.
At the briefing, Nahid Islam said the attack was part of a broader pattern of intimidation, citing the July uprising in Gopalganj, an earlier attack on Adviser Mahfuz Alam abroad, and now the assault in New York. “These are not isolated events. They are the continuation of Awami League’s fascist activities,” he said. He accused the government and the Foreign Ministry of failing to protect opposition figures, claiming a section of the administration was complicit. He demanded the removal and punishment of those responsible, including the resignation of the New York Consul General.
The NCP also issued several demands: immediate arrest of all attackers in New York, a full investigation into the security failure, removal of pro-Awami League officials from the Foreign Ministry, publication of the list of five suspects arrested for the earlier attack on Mahfuz Alam, and swift, transparent trials for the July uprising killings. The party further called for Awami League, as an organization, to face trial for alleged crimes over the past 15 years.
In response to questions on why NCP’s local diaspora committee was absent at the airport, Nahid claimed their supporters were misled about the exit route of the delegation, a failure he said lay with security and protocol officials. Addressing remarks by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir that NCP was not a political force, Nahid said such judgments should be left to the people. He warned that attempts to rehabilitate the Awami League politically would backfire on BNP.
He reiterated that Awami League had no place in Bangladesh’s political future, warning politicians against efforts to bring the party back into elections. “The people of Bangladesh have already given their verdict in July. Awami League and its ideology must face justice,” he said, urging all anti-fascist forces to unite against the party. As part of its protest, NCP announced demonstrations in Dhaka’s Shahbagh on Tuesday evening, along with protest programs across all districts and metropolitan areas. Senior NCP leaders, including Nahida Sarwar Niva, Tajnuva Jabin, Saleh Uddin Sifat, and Abdullah Al-Amin, were present at the press conference.
