Online Desk  :   BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said we don’t want local government elections under a caretaker government. “The duration of the caretaker government should not exceed three months and local government elections should not be under their jurisdiction,” he said. A BNP delegation participated in the ongoing thematic dialogue with the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Tuesday. Talking to reporters during a break in the dialogue, BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said they have proposed to have such a provision that important issues like national security will be decided on the basis of consensus of all political parties in the future.

He said, “The commission’s recommendation was that members of the National Assembly would be independent on all other issues except for trust votes, money bills and bills related to constitutional amendments. But from our party’s position, we have proposed to include any issue related to national security in addition to these three issues. “If a state of war is created in the country for any reason, the National Assembly must take a decision on this issue based on consensus.”

Stating that decisions on protecting national security and sovereignty must be reached by discussing and discussing with all parties, not just the government party, Salaguddin Ahmed further said, “Except for the issue of amending the constitution, almost everyone has agreed on two other issues. Some have asked for time for detailed discussions. If we can agree on these three issues, we will present our national security issue separately and it will be in our election manifesto.” The BNP leader also made a clear stand on the structure of the caretaker government, saying, “We do not want the local government elections to be under the caretaker government in any way. They proposed a 4-month term for the caretaker government. Our party’s view is that the caretaker government should not last more than three months and local government elections should not be under their jurisdiction.” Salahuddin Ahmed also expressed his opinion on the commission’s proposal on parliamentary standing committees. He said, “Their proposal was that the chairmen of all standing committees would be from the opposition party. This is unrealistic. Some important standing committee chairmen may be from the opposition party, but if everyone is from the opposition party, the government will always be hampered in carrying out its work.”
