RAJUK Chairman receives Asian Townscape Award in Hong Kong

Staff Reporter : The Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK), Engineer Md. Riaz Uddin Islam, has received the prestigious Asian Townscape Award on behalf of RAJUK at a ceremony held at the CIC Zero Carbon Park in Hong Kong. He received the honor on Thursday at 2:00 pm (Bangladesh time) from Patrick Lau Sau Shing, Chairman of the Asian Habitat Society. Architect Iqbal Habib, Director of architectural firm Bithi Limited, and architect Md. Ishtiak Jahir were also present at the ceremony. This year, the Asian Townscape Award was jointly organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Asian Habitat Society, Fukuoka Asian Urban Research Center, and the Asia Townscape Design Society. According to the organizers, 11 projects from 7 countries were selected for the award from a total of 72 projects worldwide for their outstanding contributions to urban environment, public life, aesthetics, and environmental sustainability.
Under this initiative, the RAJUK project titled “Integrated Development of Hatirjheel Area and Begunbari Canal,” designed by Bithi Architects Limited, received the award in the category of Dhaka Lake and Wetland Development. Although Bangladesh has previously won this award three times, this marks the first time that Dhaka city itself has been honored with the prestigious international recognition.
Information indicates that the Hatirjheel project has long been regarded as a significant model for improving Dhaka’s urban structure, public utility, restoration of water bodies, and development of recreational infrastructure. Experts believe that this international recognition sends a strong and positive message regarding Bangladesh’s achievements in architecture and urban development. Sources say that through this award, Bangladesh’s capacity and potential in urban planning have gained renewed recognition on the international stage.
