Online Desk  :   The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to appoint former ICC Elite Panel umpire Simon Taufel to lead umpire education in Bangladesh under a three-year contract. The decision was made at the BCB Board of Directors meeting on 30 June. Under this three-year agreement, Simon Taufel and his organization will be paid $685,000 (equivalent to Tk 83,570,000 almost). According to the terms set by Taufel, a professional fee of $330,000 will be paid in the first year, $180,000 in the second year, and $175,000 in the third year. In addition, the BCB will cover all expenses related to course operations, accommodation, and local transportation.
Sharafuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat, the first Bangladeshi umpire to be included in the ICC Elite Panel, proposed the idea of appointing the highly respected umpire to lead this program. Taufel is widely regarded for his experience, having officiated in 74 Tests, 174 ODIs, and 34 T20 Internationals. This was confirmed by BCB Umpires Committee Chairman Iftekhar Rahman Mithu. “This matter has been discussed at the BCB several times over the past year. Simon Taufel is a highly respected name. He has worked as an umpire instructor for the ICC, ACC, and Cricket Australia. He has also provided technical support in the IPL, and even the United States is using his consultancy services. His name was proposed by our Elite Panel umpire, Saikat. After reviewing our proposal, he took time and gave an online presentation. If the ICC, ACC, India, and Pakistan can benefit from his consultancy, then why can’t we?” Mithu said.
However, Mithu could not confirm how long Taufel himself will stay in Bangladesh during the contract period. “His team will be present on the ground and monitor matches via television. How many times he will visit and how long he’ll stay has yet to be decided,” he added. – The writer is the Head of Research and Development at East West Media Group PLC.
