Online Desk  :  A Bangladesh Army major accused of training banned Awami League activists has been detained and placed in military custody. At a press briefing held on Thursday at the Officers’ Mess in Dhaka Cantonment, Brigadier General Md. Nazim-Ud-Daula, Director of Military Operations at Army Headquarters, confirmed it. Selected cadres of the banned Awami League reportedly received training as part of efforts to bring back ousted Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India following the fall of the Awami League government in the July Uprising. These training sessions took place in various areas of the capital, including Mirpur, Bhatara, Katabon, and Purbachal.

On July 8, approximately 400 party members gathered at a convention center in Bhatara to participate, having received tokens two days earlier. The sessions were reportedly led by Major Sadikul Haque, also known as Major Sadik. He was detained by the Bangladesh Army on July 17 from his residence in Uttara, Dhaka, and has remained in military custody since. The investigation is currently underway. Moreover, in connection with the case, police have arrested 22 leaders and activists from the banned Awami League, banned Chhatra League, and other affiliated organizations.

On July 12, Bhatara police detained Jubo League leader Sohel Rana from a residence in the Uttara West Police Station area. On the same day, Awami League leader Shamima Nasrin Shampa was also arrested from another house nearby. According to a law enforcement source, both Sohel and Shampa were questioned in person to verify information. Based on their statements, Major Sadik was subsequently taken into custody. Major Sadik, was stationed at Ramu Cantonment in Cox’s Bazar. According to intelligence sources, his wife, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sumaiya Jafrin, acted as his accomplice in the plot.

During their absence from official duties, Sadik and Sumaiya maintained contact with Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and organized training sessions for party activists. The operation was reportedly supervised from Kolkata by former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, with support from several Awami League leaders and former police officials, including former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, ex-chief of the Police Special Branch (SB) Monirul Islam, and former Director General of DGFI Mujibur Rahman.

Meanwhile, on Friday, ISPR announced that a court of inquiry has been formed to investigate the detained military officer over political involvement. Preliminary findings confirmed the allegations, and appropriate action will be taken following the full investigation in line with military law.
