Online Desk : President Mohammed Shahabuddin has appointed Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court as the 26th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. The presidential notification announcing the appointment came out on Tuesday and was verified to the media on Wednesday morning by Dr. Rezaul Karim, Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Law. In the notification signed by Secretary of the Law and Justice Division, Md Liakat Ali Mollah, it was stated: “Under the powers conferred by Article 95(1) of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, His Excellency the President has appointed Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh. This appointment will take effect upon taking the oath of office.”
Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury is set to take on office replacing incumbent Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed. The oath-taking ceremony for the new Chief Justice is scheduled to be held at Bangabhaban on December 28. Justice Zubayer will serve until May 18, 2028.
According to the Constitution, the country’s 25th Chief Justice, Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed, will retire on December 27 upon reaching the age of 67.
Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury was born on May 18, 1961. His father, the late AFM Abdur Rahman Chowdhury, was also a judge of the Supreme Court. He completed his LLB (Honours) and LLM degrees from the University of Dhaka and obtained another master’s degree in International Law from the United Kingdom.
Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury enrolled as a lawyer in the Judicial Court in 1985 and in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in 1987. On August 27, 2003, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court Division, and two years later, he was confirmed as a permanent judge.
On August 12, 2024, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed him as a Justice of the Appellate Division, and he took the oath on August 13, 2024.
