Online Desk : Jamaat-e-Islami has assured that elections must only be held after its key demands are fulfilled. The party insists that it has no objection to the next national election being held in February, but emphasized that a level playing field has yet to be ensured. The remarks came from Hamidur Rahman Azad, Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at Election Commission headquarters in Dhaka’s Agargaon on Thursday.
The Jamaat delegation included central working committee member Advocate Jasim Uddin Sarkar and Dhaka North City Nayeb-e-Ameer and committee member Abdur Rahman Musa. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Azad said Jamaat has urged the CEC to consider all opinions before finalizing the re-demarcation of parliamentary constituencies. He also reiterated the party’s long-standing demand to shift to a Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system, arguing that such a system would reduce electoral violence and irregularities.
“Not everyone wanted the caretaker system either,” he said, adding, “But PR system would be beneficial for the nation. If the people support it, it must be implemented.” Azad confirmed that Jamaat will continue to campaign for PR-based elections while also preparing to participate in the upcoming polls.
