He criticized the administration for disregarding the mandate of 70 percent of voters in the recent referendum, creating an unnecessary political crisis that he claims has forced ministers and lawmakers to avoid the public. Parwar accused the ruling BNP of backtracking on its pre-election promises and steering the country toward one-party fascism. He alleged that the BNP is now actively trying to protect the constitution drafted during the previous “Awami fascist regime.”
According to the Jamaat leader, this constitution grants unlimited power to the Prime Minister and turns constitutional bodies into tools of oppression and partisan control, preventing the establishment of a balanced democratic system. Reflecting on the recent political transition, Parwar noted that students and citizens sacrificed their lives and chanted “We want justice” to force former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee the country. However, he claimed the BNP is now disrespecting the demands of that mass uprising.
He argued that the current political complications stem directly from holding the national election and the referendum on the same day”a schedule the BNP had demanded. Asserting that Jamaat-e-Islami does not believe in violence, Parwar said his party accepted the election results with a heavy heart to maintain stability. He clarified that Jamaat does not want the government to resign immediately; rather, they want the administration to complete its five-year term while amending the constitution in line with the public mandate.
However, he warned that if the BNP does not change its current course, the public will be forced to take to the streets once again. The Jamaat Secretary General also criticized several ministers for pledging allegiance to the “July Charter”–the demands of the student uprising–while selectively ignoring the clauses they had previously dissented against. Looking ahead to the parliamentary budget session scheduled to begin on June 7, Parwar expressed hope that the government would table and pass a referendum bill on the very first day.
The event was chaired by Jamaat’s central working committee member and Barishal city Ameer Maulana Zahir Uddin M Babar. It was attended by several senior party figures, including Assistant Secretary General Muazzam Hossain Helal, Dhaka Metropolitan South Secretary and Member of Parliament Shafiqul Islam Masud, and central Majlis-e-Shura member Ataur Rahman Bachchu.
