District Correspondent, Cox’s Bazar : A series of daring anti-crime operations led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Jewel Chowdhury of the Gorjaniya Police Outpost in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar has created panic among criminal networks in Gorjaniya and Kacchapia unions. His tough stance against yaba trafficking, smuggling, terrorism, theft, and robbery has earned him widespread public trust, while criminals now reportedly see him as a symbol of fear.
According to local sources, since assuming responsibility at the outpost, SI Jewel Chowdhury has been conducting continuous drives against drugs, smuggling, and organized crime. Under his leadership, police recovered 25 stolen mobile phones and filed cases against five individuals in connection with the incidents.
Additionally, large consignments of smuggled chips, medicines, and flasks were seized during separate operations, leading to multiple cases being filed.
Among the most discussed operations was the recovery of nearly 100,000 yaba tablets. A case was filed in this regard under Case No. 30 dated May 13, 2026. Multiple law enforcement sources claim that after the operation, several yaba syndicate kingpins went into hiding, while border-based smuggling networks came under immense pressure.
Locals say the once crime-prone areas of Gorjaniya and Kacchapia are now experiencing a sense of relief due to increased police activity. Residents stated, “Earlier, people were afraid to move around after evening. Now the situation has improved significantly because of regular police patrols and anti-crime operations.”
However, allegations have emerged that a vested group has launched a smear campaign against SI Jewel Chowdhury due to his uncompromising role against criminal networks. Members of the local conscious community claim that a syndicate linked to drug trafficking and smuggling has been lobbying in various quarters to have him removed from the Gorjaniya Police Outpost.
It is also alleged that misleading and fabricated information is being spread through certain online portals and social media platforms in an attempt to damage his reputation.
Expressing frustration over the matter, people from different professions in Gorjaniya and Kacchapia said, “SI Jewel Chowdhury is an honest, brave, and responsible police officer. Because of his strict actions against criminals, ordinary people now feel safer. If he is transferred, criminals may become active again.”
Local businessmen, teachers, public representatives, and conscious citizens believe that a vested quarter targeted him precisely because of his effective role in curbing crime. They also demanded legal action against those involved in the alleged conspiracy and propaganda.
Meanwhile, 20 Sub-Inspectors (Unarmed) serving under the Bangladesh Police in the Chattogram Range have recently been transferred to different districts. An official order issued by the Chattogram Range DIG Office on May 20, 2026 confirmed the reshuffle.
According to Range Order No. Force/01.10.22-2026/302 and Memo No. Force/01.10.22-2026/5457(07), signed by Chattogram Range DIG Md. Moniruzzaman, SI Md. Jewel Chowdhury has been transferred from Gorjaniya Police Outpost in Ramu to Lakshmipur district. The order instructed him to join his new workplace by June 1, 2026. However, his transfer has sparked widespread discussion across the locality. Residents claim that an influential group became active in efforts to remove him because of his strict stance against criminal syndicates.
Members of the conscious community emphasized that SI Jewel Chowdhury’s contribution to improving law and order in Gorjaniya and Kacchapia deserves fair evaluation. They also urged authorities to investigate allegations of propaganda and conspiracy against him and take necessary action.
