Online Desk: The power generation at the Karnaphuli Hydropower Station (KHC) at Kaptai of Rangamati district has been declined due to the scarcity of water. ATM Abduzzaher, manager (Superintending Engineer) of KHC, said power generation at the Kaptai power plant has declined alarmingly as the water level in Kaptai Lake, the largest artificial reservoir in the country, has dropped at an unusual rate.

He said at present only Unit-4 out of 5 units of power station has been kept operational. Total 30MW power is being produced from the only operational unit and the remaining four units have been shut down. People of across the Rangamati district are now experiencing four to five hours load-shedding due to the shortage of power generation, Meanwhile, a total of 240MW electricity can be produced by the five units of the hydropower station.

According to the control room sources of the power plant, the water storing capacity of the lake is 109 means sea level (MSL) and the lowest water level is 68MSL. However, both power production and navigation get disrupted during the dry season which lasts from October to February.
