Online Desk: A mayoral candidate in Gazipur has accused Awami League leader and suspended mayor Zahangir Alam of lying in his tax returns in 2019-20 and 2020-21 fiscal years. Atiqul Islam, mayor nominee from Gonofront, filed the complaint with the Anti-Corruption Commission in Gazipur yesterday.

After the Awami League chose not to nominate him for mayor, Zahangir tried to run as an independent. But on April 30, his bid was cancelled by an election commission officer who said Zahangir defaulted on loans.

Atiqul wrote Zahangir’s election affidavit revealed that he hid his wealth in his tax returns. After examining the complaint, the ACC may launch an investigation, said Mozahar Ali Sardar, deputy director at ACC Gazipur Integrated District Office.
