BUET students block Shahbagh over 3-point demand

Online Desk : Students from engineering faculties of various universities, including Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), blocked Shahbagh intersection on Tuesday, putting forward a three-point demand. The protest began around 3:30 PM, disrupting traffic at Shahbagh and surrounding areas. The demonstration also included a protest against recent death threats made to BUET graduate engineer Rokonuzzaman Rokon. The students had earlier announced their “Blockade of Engineers” program in a statement issued on Monday. In line with that announcement, they staged a sit-in on Tuesday, calling for legal action and structural reforms in engineering sector.
Their three-point demands are :
1. Abolish 33% quota for diploma engineers in 9th-grade (government) jobs and ensure recruitment is based solely on merit.
2. Eliminate 100% quota for diploma engineers in 10th-grade posts, making these positions open to all qualified candidates.
3. Restrict the use of title ‘Engineer’ to only those holding a BSc degree in engineering. Legal action should be taken against those who use the title without the qualification.
Traffic remained halted in Shahbagh during the blockade, leading to congestion in nearby areas. Protesters emphasized that unless their demands are addressed, they will continue their movement.
Shahbagh Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Khalid Mansur said that students from BUET and various other engineering universities have blocked Shahbagh intersection with a three-point demand. As a result, traffic in the area has come to a halt. Police are on the ground to maintain law and order, added the OC.
