Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has condemned the police action that dispersed “July fighters,” who were demanding state recognition, legal protection, and rehabilitation for those injured during the July uprising, calling it a “shame for the nation.”
“Those who were beaten by oppressors during the Sheikh Hasina-led government — if they are now beaten by the police, where will we hide our shame?” the Jamaat chief said while addressing a workers’ rally in the Mirpur-10 area of Dhaka.
Earlier in the day, several hundred people under the banner of “July martyrs’ families and injured fighters” staged a sit-in in front of the stage where the July Charter was signed. Around 1:15 pm, police dispersed them from the area. At least ten people were injured as police charged batons on the protesters, some of whom were later taken to hospitals.
Speaking about the incident, Shafiqur Rahman said, “We have repeatedly demanded that they [the July fighters] be given recognition — constitutional recognition — but the interim government has failed to do so. Today they had gathered at the South Plaza of the Parliament.”
“We’ve heard that the government is now taking the issue seriously. But I’m not sure if any unpleasant incident took place in the meantime. If it has, I feel deeply pained, saddened, and ashamed,” he added.
Emphasising that the demands of the July fighters must be treated with special importance, the Jamaat chief urged the interim government to “act justly and responsibly.”
In his speech, Shafiqur Rahman also highlighted the contribution of workers during the July uprising. “We have records of at least a thousand confirmed martyrs. Sixty percent of them were workers. They sacrificed their precious lives for the nation,” he said.
