Online Desk  :  Bangladesh Labour Party has officially received registration as a political party following a court order. The Election Commission (EC) issued the party’s registration certificate on Thursday (September 25). The party’s electoral symbol is pineapple. According to the certificate signed by EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, Bangladesh Labour Party, with its central office located at 85/1 Naya Paltan, Masjid Goli (3rd Floor), Dhaka-1000, has been registered under the Representation of the People Order (RPO), in compliance with the judgment and order of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court dated May 29.

With this, the number of registered political parties in the country now stands at 52, including the ruling Awami League. The party registration system was introduced ahead of the 9th parliamentary election in 2008. Since then, a total of 56 parties have been registered with the EC. However, five parties — Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Freedom Party, United Citizens’ Movement, PDP, and JAGPA — lost their registrations due to failure to meet registration requirements or by court orders. While Jamaat-e-Islami and JAGPA recently regained registration through court rulings, the EC has so far reinstated registration only for Jamaat-e-Islami.
