Online Desk :  A crew member has died after a fire broke out in a Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) vessel near the Naval Academy in Chittagong’s Patenga area, five days after a deadly explosion and fire on ‘Banglar Jyoti’. According to sources, the fire originated at about 12:50AM on Saturday after an explosion on the oil tanker.

After four hours’ of frantic effort, members of coast guard and navy and the port authorities managed to extinguished the blaze. Kafil Uddin, mobilizing officer of Chittagong Fire Service said, “We received information from 999 that a ship named ‘Banglar Saurav’ was on fire in the Bay of Bengal. Fourteen crew members, out of 50, jumped on the sea in panic during fire. Some of them were then rescued by the fishing trawlers. Later, all the 49 sailors were rescued with the help of navy and coast guard members.”

But a crew member, named Sadeq, died while undergoing treatment. Chittagong radio control room sources said there were a total of 50 crewmen onboard the ship, of whom 14 jumped into sea after fire broke out. On September 30, three people were killed in an explosion on Banglar Jyoti anchored at the port’s Dolphin Jetty 7.
