Maheshkhali-Matarbari to emerge as new city : CA Yunus

Online Desk : Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday said the Maheshkhali-Matarbari development project will not only serve as a deep-sea port hub but also give rise to a new city that strengthens Bangladesh’s global connectivity through blue economy. He made the remarks during a meeting with members of the newly formed Maheshkhali Integrated Development Authority (MIDA) at the state guesthouse Jamuna. The delegation was led by MIDA Chairman Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmud Bin Harun and included Commodore Tanjim Faruq, Md. Sarwar Alam, Chief SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed, and Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser’s Office Md. Saifullah Panna. During the meeting, MIDA presented its master plan and four-month work program. Ashiq Mahmud said the project will be implemented in three phases: 2025–2030, 2030–2045, and 2045–2055. Once completed, it is expected to generate employment for around 2.5 million people and add about USD 150 billion to Bangladesh’s GDP.
Yunus emphasized that the vision must extend beyond the port. “That area should not only be a facilitating zone. A new city will be born there, creating international connectivity. The ocean will be our highway to the world,” he said. Highlighting the importance of maritime research, the Chief Adviser called for the establishment of an international-standard training facility in Maheshkhali and urged collaboration with global experts. He stressed the need for academic institutions, research, and international conferences on ocean economy to build local capacity. Yunus also underlined environmental protection, noting that future development must preserve forests and promote eco-tourism. “We must plan not only for the present condition of the forests but also for how we want them to look in the future,” he added.
